Nuclear Lies, Green Truths ~ A Greenpeace Climate Solutions Event
What is the quickest way to stop a wind turbine? Build a nuclear reactor, according to environmentalists. Join Executive Director Bruce Cox of Greenpeace Canada and the Centre for Social Concern for an evening on climate change solutions.

The presentation and discussion is scheduled for Tuesday (Mar. 3) at 7:30 p.m. at the Wemple Lounge (King’s University College). Right now, Ontario is at a crossroads in terms of how electricity is going to be supplied to customers. In the next few weeks the Ontario government will release their Green Energy Act, and decide whether or not to rebuild the Pickering "B" nuclear reactor and potentially launch massive spending on new nuclear stations. Is pouring millions into new nukes a bad decision for the economy and environment? Will it effectively stop Ontario's renewable energy potential and fundamentally undermine Canada's ability to cut greenhouse gas emissions? Should Ontarians back the $40 billion in new nuclear projects or push for more green power?Admission for the event is free.

The National Farmers Union - Middlesex Local, will be showing the film "The World According to Monsanto" on Wednesday March 4, 2009, 7pm at the Ilderton Community Centre. - The film is the work of celebrated award-winning French filmmaker Marie-Monique Robin, whose three years of work on four continents exposes why Monsanto has become the world’s poster child for malignant corporate influence in government and technology. Combining secret documents with accounts by victims, scientists and policy makers, she guides us through a web of misleading reports, pressure tactics, collusion, and attempted corruption. And we learn how the company systematically tricked governments into allowing dangerous genetically modified (GM) foods into our diet—with Monsanto in charge of determining if they’re safe. Venue: Aeolian Hall. Taking Action on Climate Change A Celebration of Possibilities Climate change responses are in many ways more about people and community than about technology. The Climate Change Innovations symposium will embrace this insight utilizing local initiatives and vision brought forward by our citizens. With a focus on understanding how individuals and organizations make decisions and on applying behavioral, creative and social insights to encourage an energy-efficient and low-carbon economy. Our first symposium is a family event featuring speakers, artisans, charrettes, etc. throughout the day. Charettes for youth organized by local artists will include building solar ovens, worm composters and bird houses. Afternoon charrettes will be for the purposes of information sharing and planning on various topics, for example, Harvesting Rainwater and Mitigation through Transition to Sustainable Food Choices. The Council of Canadians would like to see the results of this conference bring community together to identify adaptive options available and capacity within our community to adapt to future climate change impacts. This will be an amazing day of inspirational concepts. It will also be a SOL food zero waste event. (Sustainable, Organic, Local where possible with an emphasis on fair trade) This is a moment to redesign and redefine our city, our communities and our future. We hope you will join us.
