IN HARMONY WITH THE EARTH.
Orchestra London celebrates Environment Week at the Grand Theatre. "In Harmony with the Earth" features the world premiere of Oliver Whitehead's Uhuru Peak, composed for and performed by cellist Christine Newland. Whitehead's concerto explores global warming and the disappearance of snow from the highest peak of Tanzania's Mount Kilimanjaro. "Global warming is such an important issue because everybody's affected by it," Newland says. Newland, who has performed many solos with Orchestra London since joining the ensemble in 1975, has always enjoyed African music. "It's very uplifting," she says, "so I asked Oliver to write a piece with an African theme." Shallowtail Grove Work Party
Swallowtail Grove is a garden located in the east corner of Greenway Park that contains plants native to this area which are required by our native butterflies. The garden has flourished since it's planting in 2006 and the many species of butterflies, bees and other insects commonly found there are living testimonies to its vital habitat value.
Swallowtail Grove was planted and is maintained by Friends of the Coves staff and volunteers who meet a few times throughout the summer to pull unwanted plants invading the garden and spread mulch to keep them at bay. These are informal, leisurely work parties usually lasting about an hour where questions and sharing of knowledge of native plants and invasive, non-native plants are encouraged. Gardeners of all experience levels are welcome.
Bring work gloves and a trowel or other weeding tools if you have them
Everyone is welcome – Bring a Friend! Find a map to Swallowtail Grove at http://www.thecoves.ca/
