Work Day @ London CIty Farm (Pioneer Village)

Hey folks! We are having a big work day out in the garden at Pioneer Village this Saturday, May 30th. We will be starting bright and early, and working almost all day, but you can feel free to drop by for however long works best for you, even just to see our progress. We will have about 70 students from the Ivey school of Business coming to help us weed out the pesky crabgrass encroaching on our plot and to help us plant tomatoes. We welcome anyone who has instruments to bring them along; I will be bringing my violin and striking up some fun fiddle songs.

A great way to learn a little gardening, help out a charity, and spend the day in the sun! Bring your family, bring your friends, bring your tools, and your dancing shoes!!!

Gardening Thursdays

Gardeners and aspiring gardeners alike,

Tomorrow night at the Wharncliffe Rd. garden we will be doing some tomato maintenance, as well as, some general garden up-keep. We'll also be talking about how to keep those birds and bugs from reaping what you've sown.

If you haven't been out to the garden yet, feel free to join us, or give us a call to set another time to visit. We're always excited to see new faces, delighted to discuss food and ecological responsibility, and most of all, eager to share in the joy of growing food.

The City Farming Project is a non-for-profit based in London whose sole purpose is to increase the love - to connect people with their food, with the land, and with our heritage of healthy growing and healthy living. We help folks get down and dirty, learning the skills they can later take to their own gardens, and we promote local organic agriculture through education and the production and sales of our own high quality, ethical produce.

GreenDrinks Gardening Club

Hello Gardeners!

Thanks to those who made it out last week. A rainbow did come out after the rain, and we made some plants very happy in their new home. I hope the greens were to everyone's liking - if you've any nice recipes, please do share!

This evening we'll be training our peas to climb and preparing some nice labels for the garden, to polish off our work to date.

Come on out, one and all - we're growing food; we're growing change.

"tomato planting extravaganza"

Learn the how-to's of tomato planting and creating the environment: spacing of varieties, appropriate supports, feeding techniques and planting techniques. We will field questions about disease control and maintenance thru out growth of the plant.

Grow Your Green Thumb with GreenDrinks - Part 2

Well, we've recieved such great response to our new gardening club that I have decided to organize two groups; one on Thursday evenings at the Wharncliffe location, and the other on Saturday afternoon's at the Meadowlily location. Which means we still have room for those who haven't confirmed their spot yet.

For all those who have confirmed, if you are interested in carpooling I need you to send me your chosen location asap so that I can connect you with your ride share group.

Here's the skinny:

Thursday Evenings from 6:30-9pm (Starting May 29th)
Location: 1350 Wharncliffe Road S pass Southdale, Bad Boys and the old Home Depot. On the same side you will come to a long driveway with lots of 'for sale' signs everywhere and beautiful pines running the length. The garden is to the left behind the little white house and red shed.

Saturday Afternoons from 3-6pm (Starting May 31st)
Location: 25 Meadowlily Road. Highbury to Commisioners. Turn left onto Meadowlily (1st lights across from Rona), drive down until you come to a little red brick century cottage on the left hand side. The garden is behind the house.

GREENDRINKS GARDENING CLUB 2008

Who: Anyone interested in learning how to grow their own fresh, organic produce. (This years selection: 32 varieties of tomatoes, swiss chard, chinese and green beans, leeks, peas, beets, green onions, lettuce, spinach, white radishes, herbs etc.)

What: A working/teaching exchange were participants have the opportunity to come out to the farm and get their hands dirty. There will be a variety of jobs from light to strenuous, so you choose the activity level you feel most comfortable with.

When: Every Thursday evening starting May 29th, 2008 from 7pm to dark (or when you are done).

Where: 1350 Wharncliffe Road S just past Southdale on the same side as Bad Boys and the old Home Depot. There is a long drive with lots of 'for sale' signs everywhere and beautiful pines down the driveway. The garden is to the left.

How:
Carpooling
We will arrange to meet at 6:30pm at 5 meeting points throughout the city. When deciding who will drive, I recommend that each group create a rotation cycle. (Once headcount is confirmed I will send out more specific meeting point details.)

Carpool Locations:
1. Central - Downtown
2. East - Argyle Mall
3. South - Whiteoaks Mall
4. North - Masonville Mall
5. West - Westmount Mall

What to bring:
- gardening gloves – “PRIZE” for the most original pair

At present the farm is in need of:
- yogurt lids for labeling tomatoes
- pie plates or other shiny tins to hang on deer fence
(a great way to keep ‘em at bay!)
