Bike Week Film Screening

Today, many cities struggle with providing a menu of transportation choices for residents. Traffic slows things down and adds more CO2 to our air. Riding a bicycle is a greener option for getting around. London Public Library is pleased to partner with the City of London and TREA to present episodes from the acclaimed PBS series 'E²' which illustrate how other cities are coming up with creative ways to manage this issue. TREES OF MOUNT PLEASANT CEMETERY - Nature London

Established more than a century ago, the cemetery contains a number of interesting native and non-native trees. Specialties include Tulip-tree, Cucumber Magnolia, Chestnut Oak, Black Maple and Ohio Buckeye. If we are lucky, some of these may be in flower. The London Region branch of the Architectural Conservancy of Ontario celebrates the 175th Anniversary of Eldon House by featuring the oldest home in London on its 37th annual Geranium Heritage Home walking tour of architectural gems. This fundraising event includes guided visits to the interiors of several homes. The ACO has been active in built heritage preservation in London for more than 40 years. Sarah will be speaking about how Canadians can bring about a more local and sustainable food system. Locavore outlines with precision how Canada lost self-sufficiency in food and recounts with joy and enthusiasm the stories of individual farmers, co-ops, community projects and businesses which will bring us back to a more localized food system that won't cost the Earth. This event is an exciting addition to the London Public Library's commitment to programs about our community, gardening and food production beyond our borders. On the Road to a Green Economy

Join us for a panel discussion on what a green economy would look like, how we can build one locally and what government policies are needed in order to make the transition. Panelists include Tony Clarke, author of Tar Sands Showdown; Jamie Skimming, a Professional Engineer responsible for Air Quality and Climate Change in London; Ken Bondy, from Canadian Autoworkers Union; and Sarah Jane Saska, youth representative and key organizer in the southwestern Ontario speaking tour. There will be community displays starting at 6:30, the event will kickoff at about 7, and afterward there will be musical performance from Three Penny Piece and another opportunity to learn about community groups. Film Screening: Farm for the Future

Film maker Rebecca Hosking, known for her startling documentary Message in the Waves, brings the same sort of passion to her topic here. Hosking is going to take over her family farm in Devon, UK and has looked at the unsettling aspects of corporate agriculture, including its heavy fossil-fuel use. She goes around her region to meet farmers who are using low fossil fuel agriculture styles and finds that nature’s diversity holds the key to positive change. Group conversation to follow.

Come out to celebrate the arrival of summer at the German Canadian Club's annual Summer Solstice Celebration. All are welcome to this free, family-friendly event which begins at 3:00pm. There will be live music, soccer, bbq and refreshments.
I will be leading a walk along the Coves East Pond at 4:00pm. The event will close with a bonfire and sing-along at dusk.

Tree Planting @ the EcoPark

We need your help! Come out and join us at the Eco Park and help plant some trees, have a bbq lunch, and help us in honouring the Special Olympics Canada Summer Games Athletes and their families. Help create a legacy, as one tree will be planted for every Special Olympics Canadian Summer Games Athlete. Our Goal: Plant 1426 trees, one for each athlete this summer. Place: The EcoPark - Medway Road, just east of Clarke Road, look for the large sign and entrance. A big thank you to Fanshawe College, Special Olympics Summer Games London 2010, for selecting the EcoPark as the place to plant the trees.
