September: Events Around the City

Tues Sept 1st
Herb Walk @ The Living Centre

Experience the array of edible herbs and plant medicine through the various seasons. Come to one, a Series, or attend all of them. There are thousands of species of edible and medicinal Plants in the world, yet fewer than 20 species provide 90% of our food. There are hundreds of less well known delicious and nutritious edible plants that live in our back yards and fields. Find out if they're in your back yard! Speaker: Dr. Brian Clement - author, internationally renowned speaker, and director of the Hippocrates Health Institute in Florida. Dr.Clement has an enormous knowledge on the topic of health, longevity, disease prevention and nutrition and over 30 years of experience working in this field of study. Parks and Recreation Master Plan Public Meeting - Community Gardens/Bike Paths etc.
What is needed for a stable enduring community garden system? How should we plan the future development of the city's bike path systems? Join us for a public meeting that will influence policy surrounding our public green spaces. Location: City Hall at the Community and Protective Services Committee regular meeting. GREENDRINKS LONDON - Ian Colin James

Ian Colin James is a fly fishing guide, national best selling author and a conservationist. In January of 2009, he began teaching the first accredited fly fishing course in Canada at Fanshawe College. Ian is well known for his quick, dry Scottish wit and his after dinner speaking engagements have taken him all across Canada and the USA. Ian has been involved in the Springbank Dam fiasco for 8 years and that's what he is going to chat about at GreenDrinks. If you want to know anything about the fish and the wildlife along the Thames river, this is probably your best chance to find out as Ian spends a lot of time guiding there. Join us at The Morrissey House, 359 Dundas Street in the heart of downtown London.

Tree Planting w/ Reforest London

Location: Fido Pottersburg Park, at the intersection of Gore and Hamilton Roads
Go Green with the London Knights! Players with the London Knights will be planting trees with ReForest London from 1-3pm. Tree planting continues until 4pm. By bus: Hamilton Road bus (3) to Gore. Parking at the dog park. Please bring water, wear proper footwear (no sandals), and dress for the weather. Bring a shovel if you can, but we have lots of tools to share. Planting trees with us is a great way for secondary students to earn volunteer hours. You don't need to sign up to volunteer -- just come ready to work and have some fun. Doors Open in the Coves - Friends of the Coves

Come check out the coves environmentally significant area… our doors are open! There will be an informative display and volunteers on-hand to answer questions at the north end of the West Pond. Guided tours will leave the display at approximately 10:15, 11:15, 12:15, 1:15, 2:15 and 3:15 and will lead from the West Pond to the East Pond. This will be an easy-going walk mostly following a mowed path. The guide will highlight various Friends of the Coves Subwatershed project sites along the way, including a native plant butterfly garden and naturalization areas. (accessed via Greenside Ave., north off of Springbank Dr.). Parking is available in the first parking lot along Greenside Ave. Everyone is welcome. Please keep dogs on a leash and pick up after them. Fall Plant Sale - Civic Garden Complex

Don't miss this chance to purchase locally produced and/or reused plant material at reasonable rates... Civic Garden Complex, 625 Springbank Drive. CASH OR CHEQUE ONLY. This sale takes advantage of the City of London staff’s dividing and removal of overgrown/unwanted perennials, bulbs, trees and shrubs. Bulbs are most often new varieties and of good quality. Perennials, house plants, seasonal & tropical potted arrangements, trees, shrubs, and bulbs will be available for sale. Fall is a great time to plant perennials, shrubs, trees and some bulbs. Do you have perennials that need dividing or a shrub you would like to remove? Do you have unwanted house plants? DON'T THROW THEM OUT! Plant donations are accepted. Please drop plant donations off at the rear of the Civic Garden Complex between September 15th and 26th - 8 am to 3 pm.

A Slow Taste of Southern Ontario

Slow Food London is proud to announce an annual event that celebrates our incredible northern bounty, while supporting a local charity. This year our charity is Growing Chefs Ontario. This event will feature over 25 participants and offers guests an opportunity to sample and learn about local/organic food, as well as, interact with local farmers, chefs, vinters and micro-brewers. Everyone producing a dish has been given the challenge to come up with an innovative way to serve his or her item to keep the event green. All guests receive a complimentary sampling glass upon entry.

Tickets: Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door. Sampling tickets can be purchased at the time of entry.

Amazing Tree Quest Awards Luncheon - Museum London

The Amazing Tree Quest was a city-wide contest to celebrate the important role that trees play in our lives. The contest allowed individual Londoners (or anyone from anywhere) to nominate trees located in London, Ontario. Prizes will be awarded in 10 categories, plus a People's Choice Award for the tree that received the most online votes. Tickets are $25 and are available at City Hall - 3rd floor councilors office. The Parks and Recreation Master Plan is more than just community gardens. It includes recommendations that would allow 3 m wide asphalt paths to be carved into the City's Environmentally Sensitive Areas!
