GLOBAL CHANGE AND THE END OF GROWTH

William Rees is best known in ecological economics as the originator and co-developer of “ecological footprint analysis.” His book on eco-footprinting, Our Ecological Footprint, with then PhD student Dr Mathis Wackernagel, has been translated into eight languages, including Chinese.
Dr. Rees is a human ecologist, ecological economist, Professor and former director of the University of British Columbia ’s School of Community and Regional Planning (SCARP) in Vancouver , Canada . His research and teaching focus on the biophysical prerequisites for sustainable societies in an era of accelerating global ecological change.
Dr. Rees is a founding member and past President of the Canadian Society for Ecological Economics and founding Director of the One Earth Initiative. His work is widely recognized and in 2007 he received the prestigious Trudeau Foundation Fellowship. The Vancouver Sun has recognized him as one of British Columbia ’s top “public intellectuals” and in 2006 he was elected to the Royal Society of Canada.

In 2006, a new initiative called the 20 Minute London Makeover was launched to allow the business community to demonstrate they could join in and clean up the outside of their buildings and corporate neighbourhoods. It was a great success. In two years, the event grew to include more than 150 businesses, schools and government locations.

18th Annual Coves Clean-Up
We need your help! Come out and join your neighbours in making the Coves Subwatershed a healthier environment. Register at the Greenway Park parking lot from 9 - 9:30 a.m. (on Greenside Ave. off of Springbank Dr.) to get supplies and assignments (for a map to this site go to the event listing at www.thecoves.ca). After registering, participants will spread out on foot and by car to work in public spaces throughout the Coves Subwatershed including Greenway Park, Murray Park, Euston Park, Basil Grover Park and Highland Woods. Activities will include garbage clean-up, tree and shrub planting/mulching and putting up bird nestboxes. There will be work appropriate for people of all ages and ability levels. ***Through participation in this event, secondary school students can earn Community Involvement Volunteer Hours.

Presented by Waste Free World, Message in the Waves kick-started the plastic bag free movement in the UK. It is an intensely moving documentary that focuses on the effects of marine pollution on the people and wildlife of Hawaii. Please be aware that a few scenes show animals in distress and may be disturbing to some viewers. The Story of Stuff is about our consumerist society and how it is contributing to climate change and other environmental problems. The films will be followed by a discussion examining what individuals, neighbourhoods and cities can do to reduce our impact. Chimney Swifts are swallow-like birds that nest inside old brick chimneys and fly high to capture insects on the wing. RCT - Computers For Schools is holding a free computer drop-off day at the Covent Garden Market in celebration of Earth Day. WHY? Every 15 seconds a child dies from water-related diseases amounting to nearly 6,000 deaths each day. The average distance that African and Asian women walk to find clean water is 6 km. It is 12% more likely that a child will attend school if water is available within a 15 minute walk rather than an one hour walk. EVERY DROP MATTERS...
