Power Down on Thurs. August 14th

REMEMBER THE BLACKOUT?

Five years ago, on August 14 at 4:13 p.m., Ontario and much of eastern North America was plunged into a blackout that lasted several days. In that time of crisis, some beautiful things happened:

· we saw the stars, like never before
· people organized barbecues and street parties
· we rediscovered the importance of conservation

In 2005, Mayor Michael Harding from Woodstock started the first blackoutday challenge - challenging other municipalities to a voluntary blackoutday. This year, the Blackout Day Group has been formed to promote publicinvolvement in the campaign. So, how about we all pitch in and lend ahand in promoting a "Power Down for the Blackout" campaign. It's a simple campaign, but ever so useful in keeping up the public pressure for betterconservation programs and incentives.

Chris Winter, the Executive Director of The Conservation Council of Ontario has set up a couple of pages on the "We Conserve" website and a SurveyMonkey page where people can volunteer to print off and hand out postersto local stores, restaurants and offices. Please feel free to sign up -He would like to seed the site with a number of volunteers before we go "public".

These things are worth celebrating. The Conservation Council of Ontario, the Blackout Day Group, and many others need your help to help Ontario Power Down on Thursday, August 14.
